Your service is important. Your service is busy. You are one of millions pledged to defend the United States - and each one of those millions needs to prepare for what comes next. Countless American soldiers are learning just what you are reading here. To serve their nation, they have to put in the time. That time is not just in the simulator or on the boat. That time is at night, during meals, and on weekends. That is time invested to make your nation great. It is one thing to stand at the border and defend the country you love. It is another thing to step back and find that the borders and boundaries that keep your nation from its peak are the ones that you find locking you away from where you could have been. Those are borders that do not need to be held. Those are borders that need to be crossed, that need to be eliminated, that need to be replaced with bridges to take you from where you are to a degree - holding, promotable, talented member of a great force in this nation, different from the one where you now serve: the force of the people who do hard things.
Your commanding officer will tell you that your military service is the best way you can serve. Your commanding officer is right - but part of that military service is preparation. Your nation needs citizens who are prepared to serve throughout their lives. Your high school diploma, your associate's degree, your bachelor's, maybe even your master's - whichever you have, your certification proves to you and your nation that you are prepared. You are in this nation's most effective school to learn to work. Discipline and drive are more than goals; for you, they are reality. When you take those and apply them to a correspondence course, online degree, or study program, you will see why you were brought to this point. However you got here, you are where your nation needs you, as long as you do what your nation needs you to do: to serve, to work, and to learn.
